Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and efforts to transform a weekend into service for our Lord through serving our community. During the weekend of June 12-14, a total of 151 people served at 13 different locations and logged 471 hours of service.
May the Lord continue to bless our service for others as we continue to spread the free and saving message of the Gospel.
Compassion Weekend on the first weekend in June has been said to be a great start to the summer series. Is this service, however, from your heart? Is it how you want to serve your Lord and God? So often in our busy schedules, we as believers get wrapped up in religious activities and doing good works. Though, the good works of Compassion Weekend are a blessing in disguise for the many people that were helped, that work would mean nothing if there were no heart for the Lord behind it. The works of CW stand as a reminder that we are to live everyday as if it were CW and realize that though physical needs may be met, the spiritual needs of so many people are at stake and must be addressed. CW gave us a chance as a church to go out and be the sermon and show people the Gospel of Christ rather than just sit in church and hear the preacher. Though preaching is good, CW reminds us of the Great Commission and what we as the body of Christ are charged with: to bring and teach the Gospel of Christ to all nations. That includes right here in our nation, and in our neighborhood, not just overseas. We are called as a people to serve Christ everyday with our whole being - our heart, mind, soul, and strength. The attitude of CW can be two different things. Do you want everyone to look at you and tell you what a good work you are doing? The Bible says all of the glory will be here. Or, do you want your good works to shine before your Father in heaven? The Bible says that your reward will be great. Does Jesus get the glory from your life?

During the Compassion Weekend 2008 events, lives were impacted by our random acts of kindness. Fortunately, the message of "Service, not Services" will reach beyond just the people that we physically interacted with, thanks in part to John Neville's article in the Franklin NOW.
Thanks to all of you who participated! Despite the torrential rains and flooding canceling the Sunday events, this year's Compassion Weekend was still a success! More specific reports on the events and a slideshow will follow :)

It may not be breaking news, but the
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel published an
article online last month about various local churches putting faith into action. The article mentions Southbrook's inaugural Compassion Weekend of '07, and certain coffee house water closet sanitation services. The article also highlights other churches' faith-to-action events and notes that the "
effort is part of a broader trend." You can view the full article

Our Vision is simple, to serve others as Christ served us. We ask that you save the dates, June 6-8, when we will participate with area churches in organized acts of compassion throughout Franklin and Milwaukee. We will then culminate with a church picnic in the afternoon on June 8th to share experiences and enjoy fellowship with each other. Compassion Weekend started June, 2007 when 200 members of Southbrook Church (2/3 of our church body) served our neighbors at 19 different locations throughout Franklin and Milwaukee. Starting on Friday, June 6th and continuing through the morning of Sunday, June 8th, there will be formal and informal service activities for you, your family, friends, and neighbors to participate in. From washing cars, to singing at a nursing home, to passing out water bottles to strangers, we want to engage in service and extend God's love in a practical way. Since we will be serving the community on Sunday morning, there will be no traditional worship service on June 8th.
